Marquee Safety

Licences
There are no restrictions on the use of marquees for private functions and you will not require any form of licence for them. If you are holding a function to which the General Pubic may be admitted or at which alcohol is being sold you may need to obtain a Permit from the Licensing Authority who will consult with the Fire Officer and he will require that most or all of the following safety measures are implemented. These safety measures are not compulsory for private functions but are recommended as good practice.

Siting
Care should be taken when choosing a site for your marquee to ensure that invitees can enter and leave safely and that emergency vehicles will have an access to within 50 metres of any part of the marquee. Such access should not be obstructed by overhead cables. Marquees need to be fixed down to the ground by use of metal stakes and the chosen site should therefore be free from underground services such as gas pipes, electricity cables etc.

Exit
In the event of an emergency, people should be able to walk out of the marquee along clearly recognisable and unobstructed routes or gangways. There should usually be at least two exits. Furniture should be arranged so as to allow access to the exit routes. The distance to the nearest exit should not exceed 18 metres and the gangways should be at least 4 feet wide. Exit routes and doorways should not be obstructed. EFX will advise on the number of exits required.

Occupancy
It is important to get the right size of marquee to the required number of guests. This may be calculated as follows.

  Standing:
Theatre-style seating:
Seated at tables:
Dance Floor:
  0.3 square metres per person
0.5 square metres per person
1 to 1.5 square metres per person
0.5 square metres per person dancing

Electrical
All EFX lighting is wired to incorporate earth leakage circuit breakers and to feed from 15 amp sockets (240v).

Never
Connect any other electrical equipment to EFX wiring unless carried out by a qualified electrician.

Always
Ensure that any other electrical equipment is installed by a qualified electrician.

For functions taking place after dark the Fire Officers’ Regulations require a secondary source of (emergency) lighting and exit signs. EFX are able to supply these if required.

Heating
EFX recommended Heating System has the heating source situated outside the marquee for additional safety reasons. For public events this is the only permitted form of heating.

General Safety Points
To minimise the chance of fire or accident please:

  - keep the whole site area tidy;
- avoid the accumulation of loose waste which can ignite;
- keep rubbish in non-combustible containers;
- try to avoid the use of naked flames;
- avoid using highly-combustible materials;
- keep cooking equipment unattended;
- NEVER leave lighted equipment unattended;
- site barbecues well away from the marquee;

Where combustible materials is stored e.g. Straw bales, smoking should be prohibited.

For public functions the Fire Officer may require the presence of Fire Extinguishers.
EFX are able to supply these if required.
